Llanfairfechan to Bangor (11 miles)

Image
The guidebook has this section at 9 ½ miles. However, we were starting at Penmaen Park, which is the very east end of Llanfairfechan, because that was where we had caught our bus last time, and aiming to walk on as far as Nantporth beyond Bangor, because that was handier for home - so it was going to be longer. On the other hand, the book didn't have the new bit of path through Penrhyn Park, which was bound to shorten the distance. I had estimated 11 miles before starting, and it turned out to be just a little short of that. From Penmaen Park, it seemed obvious that the walk should start by crossing the footbridge over the A55 to get down to the shore. After doing that, I checked the guidebook and, strangely, the Path doesn't go that way, but we continued anyway along a track to join Shore Street East, where the book has an alternative route that leads to the promenade.  The main Wales Coast Path carries along the road for longer, which is odd. On the promenade, we stopped at t...

Llandudno West Shore to Llanfairfechan (12 miles)

We took a bus back to the White Rabbit Statute at Penmorfa/West Shore, which was where we had left off last time. The first leg was a bit confusing. After a short walk along the promenade, the  guidebook  had asked us to cross a car park towards a Coast Path sign, then follow a narrow path between dunes and beach. We have found in our walk so far that these signs aren't always there, and we didn't see one here, but we did find a narrow path between dunes and beach, and followed that. The book said it was sometimes covered in sand, and soon the path disappeared altogether under sand - but reassurance was provided by the book's map which showed us walking along the high water line and we were definitely between dunes and beach. Less reassuring was the fact that this was at high tide, one of the highest of the year, that beach was really only a metre or two in width.. After a while we really did join the proper path, because this sign said so. It also showed that the path had ...

Colwyn Bay to Llandudno West Shore (12 miles)

Starting again where we last left off, in this case at Colwyn Bay's silly little pier. The last one had to be dismantled because it was falling down and dangerous, but it was a listed building so something had to be done. This is all they could afford, quite possibly cobbled together from bits of the old one, but it's not nearly as grand. Although it is still only March, it was sunny, so we had our first ice cream of the walk, on the promenade here from  Parisella's on the beach . Then it was onwards again along the sea front, stopping briefly to inspect St Trillo's church at Llandrillo-yn-Rhos (aka Rhos-on-Sea). Conversation once again turned to sea defences, especially as we passed the golf club on our left whwich seemed in places to be lower than the beach. Our guide books have too many suggested alternative routes and diversions, when we are trying to focus on completing the path. But as we approached  the Little Orme, there was one small diversion which was ...
